Blue/cyan light reduction for relaxed evening viewing and a good night’s sleep

It’s widely known that light generated by consumer electronic devices can disrupt people’s natural sleeping pattern because it inhibits the body’s ability to produce the hormone, melatonin. However, it is becoming increasing clear that reducing blue emissions alone is not sufficient to reduce this effect, as the light capable of interfering with our circadian rhythm has a wider spectrum, ranging from blue to cyan.

Whilst it’s possible to adjust the blue/cyan light setting on smartphones and TV/PC monitors, the trade-off is a poorer image quality overall, with detail such as skin colour lost. This image quality problem is solved by Nighteq, Spectral Edge’s novel display enhancement technology.

Built from the ground up using sophisticated colourimetry algorithms and taking into account neuroscience principles, Nighteq is equally effective in reducing light emissions in the blue and cyan spectrums, without compromising overall image quality. It can help overcome sleep reduction issues caused by reduced melatonin levels without compromising image quality or detail.

How it works

Nighteq gradually substitutes blue and cyan colour palettes with warmer red tones on consumer electronic devices, without compromising the overall image quality or natural skin tones, to simulate natural evening light. The speed at which this happens, or the amount of blue/cyan light reduction needed is totally configurable, depending on location or application.

How it works

Eyeteq subtly modifies colours on a TV screen, tablet or smartphone in such a way that colour-blind people can easily differentiate between colours they otherwise cannot. In some cases, sport for example, it actually allows colour-blind viewers to distinguish the two teams! The result is a much more accessible and pleasing picture for colour blind viewers.

The modification can be adjusted (using a TV remote control or in the settings menu on a smartphone) to suit the degree and type of colour blindness, so colour blind viewers can enjoy enhanced details, while non-colour-blind viewers see little difference or even prefer the end result.

Enables bitrate reduction with improved perceptual quality

Next-generation TVs and broadcasts will feature High Dynamic Range (HDR) capabilities as standard, with a greater contrast ratio making TV content more vivid and real-life for a more engaging and immersive viewing experience.

It will take time, however, for HDR UHD broadcasts to be widely rolled out over cable, terrestrial or satellite networks due to bandwidth availability and infrastructure investment. Even with OTTtv there are challenges with bitrate and network limitations.

Vividteq addresses these challenges by producing HDR-like video content while enabling a lower bitrate. It does this by improving the perceptual quality of video output from a pre-distortion filter. Pay TV and OTTtv providers can therefore achieve bandwidth savings and deliver better viewing experiences to their audiences before any CPE (consumer premises equipment) upgrade.

How it works

Vividteq processes content in real-time by deconstructing and reconstructing the video feed on a frame-by-frame basis within existing workflows. Vividteq analyses the luma and Chroma on each frame and adjusts the picture according to estimated perceptual features, such as contrast, brightness or more vivid colours. It can be used as a standalone service to improve perceptual quality, or with a pre-distortion filter to reduce bitrate as well.

The result, real-time generated, HDR-like viewing experiences with reduced delivery bandwidth and infrastructure costs for terrestrial, cable, satellite, IPTV and OTTtv networks.
